Obituary
Nancy Annette Smith Dorton of Trumann, Arkansas, died Nov. 11, 2020, of natural causes at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 13 days. Nancy was born Wednesday, May 29, 1935 to Raymond and Virginia Rushing Smith on May 29, 1935, at Tulot Plantation south of Trumann, where her father ran the mercantile store for the Cash family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold Dorton, her sister, Ramona Steadman, and brother, Eddie Smith.
She is survived by her children, Denise Dorton of Little Rock; Lora Dorton-Cheney (Jim) of Indianapolis; and Kevin Dorton of Trumann; three grandchildren, Sara, Hanna and Hayden; and two nephews. Not to be omitted are her beloved Bible study ladies, her “sisters in Christ,” especially Violet and Pat. Also her special friend, Ron Davis, who brought her much joy in her last year.
Nancy worked with her husband in his photography business for many years prior to his death in 1997. She then made her children very proud by learning computer skills and acquiring various clerical jobs until her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she joyfully sang in the choir until poor health sidelined her. “Miss Nancy” also loved birds, flowers, nice perfume and reading books, which were her transport to the world.
Visitation will be Friday from noon to 1:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery in Jonesboro with Josh Odom officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Baptist Church, Trumann Public Library or an animal rescue group. An online register book can be signed at www.thompsonfuneralhome.net.

"Dear Denise, Lora, and Kevin,
It is so hard to lose the last parent. You all were as lucky as Pam and I were. We grew up knowing that we were our parents greatest accomplishment. Remember the good times as well as the bad. Tell stories, laugh, and cry. It is all part of the journey. Praying for you all.
