Mr. Gaylon Ray Karnes, of Trumann died Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Regional Medical Center of Memphis at the age of 69 years, 8 months, and 4 days. He was born Saturday, May 15, 1943 in Campbell, MO., to the late Cecil and Betty Benson Karnes. He had lived most of his lifetime in Trumann and was a truck driver for Johnston Trucking and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by one sister, Christine Smith and his parents. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Lorine Ethel Wilson Karnes of the home, one daughter, Lora Crotzer (Keith) of Trumann, one brother, William Karnes of Pollard, Ark., two sisters, Peggy Robertson of Brownsville, Oregon, and Pat Isbell of Jonesboro. Funeral service will be Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home in Trumann with Rev. Larry Loggins officiating. Burial will follow in Nettleton Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ark. Pallbearers will be Keith Crotzer, Robert Nichols, Kenneth Duvall, Phillip Johnston, Ronnie Johnston, and Keith Fisher. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home. An online guest book can be signed at www.thompsonfuneralhome.net.

"I was born and raised in Elkhorn City, Kentucky and was one of those kids in the 1940 s that gteered the Santa train as it started its journey from Elkhorn City. My parents ran the only restaurant in Elkhorn so the railroad employees ate their meals at the White Star restaurat and we knew them all by their first names. I made many many trips on the old Clinchfield RR as my grandfather was one of the engineers driving the train and we would travel to the end of the line at Spartanburg to visit with my fathers older sister. First activity upon arrival was to take a bath as my eyes and hair would be full of cinders. Sometimes we would stop and stay in Erwin Tennessee as that is where my mothers parents lived and was also the HQ of the Clinchfield. I can vividly remember traveling to Erwin and Spartanburg during the WW2 years and many times would go visit the mail car that was part of the train and talking with the USPS employees. Excitement came at each small town that had a post office with the delivery and pick up of the mail without stopping the train. For a 8-9 year old boy this was a real thrill.
